Ge-on-Si SPADs are a low cost, afterpulse-free alternative to InGaAs/InP SPADs, and offers
the game-changing potential of integration with CMOS circuitry. In the last few years, Heriot-Watt
and Glasgow have become world-leaders in Ge-on-Si SPAD detector, using innovative planar
geometry designs. We intend to expand this to near-room temperature (Peltier-cooled) operation of
arrayed detectors for use as focal plane arrays in the SWIR region, ideal as a potentially low-cost
solution for automotive lidar, as an example. WP1 is led by Douglas Paul and will feed into WPs 4, 5 and 6.
